In the field of social sciences, there are three main areas in Brazil today: political science and international relations, anthropology and archaeology, sociology and social studies, with sociology developing especially actively. The main areas of work of sociologists are the following: teaching in primary and secondary schools; teaching and research in public and private universities; scien-tific activities in research centers; research activities and planning in public institutions, as well as conducting social projects; research and consulting activities in the private sector, including private companies and institutes of sociological research, as well as consulting activities for social movements. One of the important directions of modern sociological thought in Brazil should be considered the so-called cultural sociology, in which the problem of the relationship between culture and power is particularly interesting. In this regard, much attention is paid to the analysis of two theoretical traditions – culturalism and institutionalism.
