What makes Russia great: a review of sociological survey data and a social media research case

Dolgov A.Yu.

Abstract

The article uses data from sociological surveys to show why Russian citizens consider their country great and are proud of it, what meanings they attach to “greatness”, and around which values and symbols they consolidate, given their concerns about external threats. In addition to the review of quantitative research data, we conducted a thematic analysis of the posts of one of the VKontakte social network group (N=100) and considered the main themes that demonstrate per-ceptions of Russia as a strong country with unique features that evoke pride and approval. Eight such themes were identified: “Russian army”; “Talented and successful people, their strength and positive qualities”; “National leader”; “Traditions and national symbols”; “Help, mutual aid”; “Beautiful and/or memorable places”; “Attitude of foreigners to Russia”; “Family”.
