Book review: Yang K. Loneliness: a social problem

Dolgov A.Yu.

Abstract

The book by Keming Yang, associate professor at Durham University (UK), is devoted to the sociological study of loneliness. He shows that the origins of loneliness always lie in the social world, and its consequences can be seen at both individual and social levels. Distinguishing types of loneliness Yang notes that objective forms of social relations and their subjective interpretations are necessary for the emergence of loneliness as a negative emotion. The author conducts a comparative social analysis across countries, registering differences in the prevalence of loneliness in them, checks the relationship of loneliness with various variables (age, gender, income level, etc.), and offers recommendations on how to stop loneliness.
