The review presents the recent socio-psychological and
sociological interpretations of the phenomenon of loneliness in late
modern society, characteristic of social knowledge of the last decade.
Interpretations of the genesis and nature of loneliness as a «disease of
the 21st century» are analyzed, including both theoretical and empirical
aspects of the problem and social policy issues in Western Europe and
Australia.
