The present review traces the history of the idea of euthanasia as well as considers some aspects of its contemporary practice, namely: definition and semantics of the notion «euthanasia»; debates of advocates of euthanasia and palliative care, respectively; cross-cultural differences in attitudes toward euthanasia; developments in euthanasia practice (using the example of the Netherlands); euthanasia for psychiatric patients.
